Community Education is a
philosophy of education and a system for community development.
As a philosophical concept, community education transforms
the idea of education from a narrow view of schooling to a
much broader view of continual lifelong learning.
Lifelong Learning is an organized
process of enabling people of all ages to gain access to the
widest possible range of education and/or training in order
that they can take control of their lives and make informed
choices regarding their future more easily.
All aspects of the community are recognized as sources in
the education of people.
Community education is people helping
people.
Citizens have a right and a responsibility to be involved
in determining community needs, identifying community resources
and linking those needs and resources to improve their community.
Comprehensive community education programs provide opportunities
for people to work together to improve their own lives and
the life of their community.
Community Development is an
educational and motivating process that engages community
members and organizations and empowers them to participate
actively in improving the quality of their life.
In a community climate of communication, openness, and cooperation,
traditional schools are transformed into community centers.
Community Centers involve
a broad range of community residents, public and private organizations,
local, and state agencies. Community centers are places where
people gather to learn, to enjoy themselves, and also to become
involved in community problem solving. It is open to students,
families and the community before, during and after school,
seven days a week, all year long.
