· publication is expected within 24 months

· publishers applying for these grants should have at least one related title published in the past

· translations already supported by another funding source of the Soros Foundations/Open Society Institute network (for example, the Roma Cultural Program or a publishing support program of a national Soros Foundation) are not eligible for these grants

· the grants will not cover 100% of translation and publication costs; publishers are expected to invest some of their own resources in the project, and to recoup their investment through book sales; the grant is intended to offset losses that the publication may incur

· contributions from other sponsors such as local foundations, non-governmental organizations, businesses or government institutions will increase the chances of obtaining a grant

· publishers should report all other subsidies and grants for the publication, and the grant requested from OSI should reflect any such additional support

· once a grant application is approved, OSI will prepare a contract and mail it to the grantee; the contract requires the publisher to commit to the publication deadline, the minimum print run translator’s fee specified in the application; publishers will be required to obtain for OSI the rights for electronic publication of the translation from the translator so that OSI may provide a free on-line access to the texts when the hard-copy of the book is out of print.

· payment of the grant is contingent upon the publisher obtaining written permission for the translation from the copyright holder, and providing OSI with a copy of the contract or letter of permission

· grants are paid in two installments, 50% upon completion of the whole translation, and 50% upon publication; OSI reserves the right to verify independently the accuracy of the translation and to withhold the grant if the translation is substandard

· grant payments are denominated in US dollars and are made directly to the publisher’s bank account
