*** Kyrgyz Books at the Warsaw Book Fair ***

With support of Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz books were
displayed for the first time ever at the 42nd Warsaw International
Book Fair (15-19 May 1997). The exhibited titles, which were published
within the framework of the "Transformation of Humanities" Program,
are very popular in schools and higher educational institutions in the
Kyrgyz Republic. Titles on the history of Kyrgyzstan, the formation of
sovereign state, postcommunist realities of new state and also books
designed for specialists studying Turkish language drew the attention
of a number of participants and visitors at the fair. To the regret of
the foundation staff present in Warsaw, not all requests for books
could be satisfied, and some of them were even stolen (!). After the
closing of the fair, the unstolen books were granted to Polish
libraries.

Numerous questions of the visitors and a meeting with the director of
the Warsaw Book Fair testified interest in the events in Central Asia
and the books published there.

The stand for this presentation was offered to the foundation for free

*** Marina Ghitoc in Macedonia ***

Marina Ghitoc of the Romanian Foundation completed a successful
consultancy trip to Macedonia with Phil Cohen to advise on the
textbook component of the proposed World Bank education project on
9-13 June. Romania has been implementing a World Bank Textbook project
now for a number of years and the Foundation has played a crucial role
in a number of vital stages. With the wealth of experience gained in
Bucharest it made perfect sense to send Marina to Macedonia. This kind
of East - East collaboration can help everyone avoid re-inventing the
wheel! [FP]

*** Marketing and Distribution Workshops in Poland ***
Training Program Announcement

The workshops described below were organized for Polish journal
editors but can be treated as a model workshop for book publishers as
well. RPC recommends BMR, the company that organized them, and invites
you to cooperate on organizing similar workshops on marketing and
distribution for publishers in your countries. We look forward to
receiving your proposals. [JC]

The workshops, that took place in January, February and March, were
organized by the Publishing Program of the Stefan Batory Foundation,
Warsaw and Fund for Central and East European Book Projects,
Amsterdam. Support was also provided by the MATRA Program of the Dutch
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The workshops were a part of the Cultural
Journals Support Project.

Long-term objectives of the project are, among others, to facilitate
changes in quality cultural publishing enabling the publishers to take
responsibility and become more independent and self-sufficient. The
short-term aims are to help the publishers and editors to acquire
market-oriented attitudes, to raise their efficiency and operating
standards, improve promotion and distribution, to establish a network
of collaborators and organizations to sustain these aims.

The target group of participants of the workshops were publishers and
editors of quality periodicals with low print runs (ca. 1,000 - 5,000
copies) dealing with cultural, political and social issues. The main
problems the publishers are confronted with are poor infrastructure
(information, promotion, distribution); insufficient means and lack of
diversity of public and private funds; lack of efficiency,
market-oriented attitudes and professional management - skills needed
for successful operating in the free publishing market.

The workshops were prepared and conducted by Mr Jacek Wlodarczyk and
Mr Andrzej Uryga of BMR (company that provides publishing consultancy
and market research) and several visiting lecturers. One series of
workshops consisted of two complementary 3-day seminars; the first
devoted to marketing and distribution; the second to advertising and
promotion. To fulfill the lecturers' conditions, the number of
participants of one workshop was limited to 20, but confronted with
the great amount of applications, the whole series were organized
twice. Participants were given two volumes of training materials (with
all referred data to, charts, definitions, etc.) and also free copies
of How to Market Books by Alison Baverstock. The program of the
seminars was very intense, the lectures (combining a necessary
theoretical introduction to marketing and promotion with practical
knowledge based on lecturers' experience) were followed daily by
evening discussions with lecturers, lasting at least till midnight.
Participants stressed the value of being able to compare and discuss
their problems, exchange ideas, think of common undertakings (Polish
Chamber of Books, International Book Fair), establish cooperation.
Some of participants also used the possibility of free consultations
with Mr Wlodarczyk and Mr Uryga.

In evaluation sheets filled in by participants after each seminar, the
content of workshops in relation to editors' problems and needs, the
quality of lecturers and their skills in transferring the knowledge
were very highly appraised (on a 1-10 scale the average score was:
Marketing and Distribution, first group: 9,05, second group: 8,80;
Advertising and Promotion, first group: 9,15, second group: 9,57).
Some participants decided to hire BMR consultants after the workshops.

technology consultant to Cracow publishing houses since 1990. He has
an MA in computer science.

considering using them in your country, please keep in mind that
interpreting should be provided.

lot of services, the main purpose for which you might want to have a
look at its world largest library catalogue is to find bibliographic
data of a title. In addition to its own catalogue containing over 27
million records for materials in any of over 400 languages, it has
links to many other on-line library catalogues. It also contains
records for materials registered for copyright since January 1978.
