================================================================

Dear Colleagues,

In this rather short issue we introduce giving the cost of each grant
mentioned. This should help compare projects as well as indicate most
cost-efficient ways of providing support.

I am pleased to mention in this issue the first Translation Project
title publish in Kazakstan. This country is not an easy one to
published books, therefore our congratulations are especially warm.

BookWire, the Web megasite reviewed in this issue is far too big for
just one short note. We will continue presenting various links it
contains in next issues of Forum.

As we would like Forum to available be as widely as possible, I would
like to ask those of you who work in foundations with regional offices
to provide me with lists of e-mail addresses of publishing staff
working in these offices. Forum will be sent also to them.

With best wishes,

Jerzy Celichowski

*** Albanian Publishers on Study Tour to Hungary ***

A group of five leading Albanian private publishers came to Budapest
on a tour of the Hungarian publishing industry on 15-20 July. The
event, conceived by Piro Misha of Open Society Foundation for Albania,
was organized jointly by the Regional Publishing Center and OSFA. The
group visited several Hungarian publishers, distribution companies,
and bookshops, and met a few specialists. Copyright, distribution, the
relationship between publishing house and distribution company, and
publishing houses appeared to be the most interesting topics for the
group. As the participants noted, the basic problems are similar in
both countries, therefore the visit was very interesting for them.

The project cost the Regional Publishing Center $2,800 and the Open
Society Foundation for Albania $4254. [JC]

*** First "East Translates East" Project Grants ***

In May Batory Foundation in Poland awarded some grants for
translations from East European languages grants within the "East
Translates East" Project. The grants were given within the
foundation's on-going grant program allocating support twice a year.
The titles supported are as follows:

Jan Patocka: Who are the Czechs? ($1565)
Jan Patocka: Heretical Essays on History of Philosophy ($1875)
Dubravka Ugresic: Culture of Lie ($1875)
Lithuanians on Poland and Poles, ed. V. Sirutavicius ($2656)

*** RPC Grant to Books Club Catalogue in Slovakia ***

A catalogue containing books published by nine Slovak independent
publishers has been published with the support of the Regional
Publishing Center. This catalogue should help distribution of books
that do not have any chance of receiving state support. The catalogue
was printed in 10,000 copies. It is to be republished every six
months. The RPC will continue to support the project but should phase
out within 3-5 year leaving the catalogue self-sustaining.

The grant awarded was $5,700, the publishers invested $1,000. [JC]

*** BookWire ***

<http://www.bookwire.com>

BookWire touts itself as "the Web's most comprehensive and thorough
guide to book information". Owned by Bowker Book Information Co., the
publishers of "Books In Print", this site is most useful as a
well-organized gateway to other sites. Most, but not all, are
American. These include direct links to:

* 1000+ publishers
* 900+ booksellers (including over 70 non-English-language booksellers
around the world)
* 500+ libraries (including about 50 European libraries)
* 1000+ links to publications on publishing (such as "Publishers
Weekly"), booktrade organizations and associations, author websites,
bestseller lists, book awards information, newsgroups, wholesalers,
review sources, printers, and wholesalers.

Other useful features are a comprehensive calendar of events in the
global book industry and "BookWire's Best Bets", an eclectic list of
new and interesting book sites.[DC]
