  The Open Society Institute Network Women's Program (NWP) and Information Programs (IP) are pleased to announce a competition to support the translation and publication of books on women’s issues. Following the success of the competitions in 1998 (Women/Gender Translation Project), 1999 (‘Women at Risk’ Translation Project) and 2000 (Women Issues Translation Project), the project continues in the year 2001 to facilitate local-language access to international women’s issues books.

This year applications for titles in following areas will be regarded with priority:

• Women & economics/ economic empowerment, and globalization
• Translation and publication of women’s issues titles from East European authors

We invite applications from publishers based in: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yugoslavia.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

• The focus of the year 2001 competition is "Women & economics/ economic empowerment, and globalization" and books by East European authors, and titles from these areas will be given preference in the decision process. The competition announcement is accompanied by a list of titles recommended for translation in these two areas. The lists can be found at http://www.osi.hu/cpd/women2001.html
• Publishers may also apply with titles from outs ide the lists.
• Each publisher may apply for maximum 3 titles
• Before applying, please, check the lists of titles supported in your country in the previous years’ competitions.

• Applications for fiction or poetry are not eligible
• applications are accepted only from publishers in the above listed countries, and grants are paid directly to the publisher; translators seeking support for a project should find a suitable publisher to make the application
• OSI does not provide copies of the original titles for review. Reading copies may normally be obtained by the original publisher.
• grant requests should not exceed $5,000, and publication is expected within about 24 months after the results of the competition
• publishers applying for these grants must have recently published at least two academic/scholarly books
• translations already supported by another funding source of the Soros Foundations/Open Society Institute network (for example, the CEU Translation Project or a publishing support program of a national Soros Foundation) are not eligible for these grants
• the grants do not cover 100% of translation and publication costs; publishers are expected to invest some of their own resources in the project, and to recoup their investment through book sales; the grant is intended to offset losses that the publication may incur
• publishers should report all other subsidies and grants for the publication, and the grant requested from OSI should reflect any such additional support
• once a grant application is approved, OSI will prepare a contract and mail it to the grantee; the contract requires the publisher to commit to the publication deadline and the minimum print run specified in the application
• he amount of the translator’s fee, as stated by the publishers in their applications, will be included in the grant contract and the publishers will have to provide evidence that the translators have been paid accordingly
• for translations of contemporary texts which are under copyright protection, payment of the grant is contingent upon the publisher obtaining written permission for the translation from the copyright holder, and providing OSI with a copy of the contract or letter of permission
• a copyright contract is not required at the time of the application submission
• grants are paid in two installments, 50% upon completion of the translation and provision of a copy of a copyright contract, and 50% upon the publication of the book and providing evidence that the translator has been paid according to the grant contract; OSI reserves the right to verify independently the accuracy of the translation and to withhold the grant if the translation is substandard
• grant payments are denominated in US dollars and are made directly to the publisher’s bank account
