Key activities University of Ljubljana (http://www.uni-lj.si/indexa.html) offers
more than 130 undergraduate and 110 graduate programs to
about 35.000 students in fields of arts, science and
technology. The university consists of 20 faculties, 3 art
academies and 3 university colleges that employ nearly 1700
full-time university teaching staff and 600 technical and
administrative staff.
Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering in one of the
technical faculties of the University of Ljubljana
(http://www2.arnes.si/~supddoln/ntf-eng.html). It offers
programs in natural and technical sciences including
technology, courses in informatics, design, and education. It
employs 62 university professors, 43 teaching and research
assistants and 62 administrative and support staff.
One of its most recent programs includes a study program of
Graphic Arts that started in 1996. Given rapid development of
this area the Interactive Media has recently been identified as
one of the most promising extensions to the faculty's
education, research and active technological collaboration
with Slovenian small and medium business enterprises.
Along with this initiative the faculty actively participates in the
Erasmus/Socrates Thematic Networks and collaborates in
bilateral international project with the Center for
PersonKommunikation, Aalborg University, Denmark that
represents one of the centers of excellence in Intelligent
Multimedia (http://www.cpk.auc.dk/imm/).
The faculty's current initiative is to establish the Interactive
Systems Laboratory that is also going to be involved in
applied research in the Interactive Media. Therefore, active
participation in the European Commission's Fifth Framework
Programme for Research and Technological Development
1998-2002 is considered to be one of the most important
goals. This should provide a sound basis of excellence in
applied research and support for the further curriculum
development.
Key products Primary orientation of our academic organization is education
and research. Nevertheless, the faculty also puts strong
emphasis on technological consultation. It prepares
analyses, certificates, standards and regulations. Members of
the Interactive Systems Laboratory (ISL) have extensive
national and international applied project experience in the
area of Human Language Technologies. National projects
included the Slovenian Telecom that resulted in one of the
first prototypes for speaker independent digit recognition over
the telephone lines. Members of the ISL participated in the
following international events: Foundation of Endangered
Languages Conference, Edinburgh, Scotland (1998);
EURASIP Eusipco'98, Rhodes, Greece (1998); ESCA
Eurospeech'97, Rhodes, Greece (1997), 2nd SQEL
Workshop “Multi-Lingual Information Retrieval
Dialogs” Pilsen, Czech Republic (1997); IEEE
International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal
Processing ICASSP'97, Munich, Germany (1997);
International Conference on Spoken Language Processing
ICSLP'96, Philadelphia, PA, USA (1996),ESCA
Eurospeech'95, Madrid, Spain (paper presentation; also
acting as Session Chair for Prosody (1995); Workshop Visual
Modules: 19th VAGM and 1st SDRV Workshop Maribor,
Slovenia (1995); Workshop Modern Modes of Man-Machine
Communication Maribor, Slovenia (invited lecture) (1994);
Ph.D. thesis presentation at the Second European Summer
School on Language and Speech Communication, Research
Institute for Language and Speech, Utrecht University, The
Netherlands (1994); European Symposium on Artificial Neural
Networks ESANN-94, Brussells, Belgium (1994);
Presentation at the Management Committee Meeting of
COST-232, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark (1994);
ESCA Eurospeech'93, Berlin, Germany (1993); Presentation
at the Management Committee Meeting of COST-232, Bled,
Slovenia (1993); IEEE International Conference on Acoustics,
Speech, and Signal Processing ICASSP'93, Minneapolis, MN,
USA (1993); IEEE International Conference on Acoustics,
Speech, and Signal Processing ICASSP'92, San Francisco,
CA, USA (1992); ESCA Eurospeech'91, Genova, Italy (1991);
IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and
Signal Processing ICASSP'91, Toronto, Canada (1991);
Neural Information Processing Systems: Natural and
Synthetic NIPS-3, Denver, CO, USA (1990).
EU projects Members of the ISL participate in the Socrates Thematic
Network Speech Communication Sciences. One of the
members participated in the COST-232 project; completed
24-month visiting research with the School of Computer
Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA; was
granted a 10-month visiting position with the Center for
PersonKommunikation, Institute of Electronic Systems,
Aalborg University, Denmark.
Non-EU funded projects The most important projects that the members of the ISL were
involved in were: 2 year applied project on digit recognition
over the telephone lines (Slovenian Telecom); 2-year
postdoctoral project Modeling Dynamics of Speech for
Continuous Speech Recognition (Slovenian Ministry of
Science and Technology; Slovenian Science Foundation;
Center for PersonKommunikation, Institute of Electronic
Systems, Aalborg University, Denmark (research grant).
