Our Strategy
EPSU is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the work of national foundations, and to
building collaboration and shared learning within the Soros foundations network.
In developing a strategy for this year, the EPSU team went through a self-evaluation
process. In 1996, EPSU provided the following programs and services at the request of our
Network partners:
- Conferences and Workshops: Education for an Open
Society Conference, School Effectiveness and School Improvement, Human Rights and Civic
Education, School Success for Roma Children
- Consultative Visits to seventeen national Soros foundations
- Resource Packages delivered to all Foundations in Textbooks, Human Rights and
Civics, School Improvement, and Comparative Educational Policy
- Study Visits: EPSU assisted in organizing visits of foundations from Haiti,
Bosnia & Herzegovina, Slovenia and Kyrgyzstan to Albania, Czech and Slovak foundations
to Montreal, Canada and the foundation from Kyrgyzstan to Hungary
- Newsletter: Open Society Education Update is
issued six times per year
- Other: Direct training of school leaders, program management workshops for
foundation staff, referral of specialists, compilation of national foundation education
programs, database of human rights and civic education specialists, educational
consultants database, lists of textbooks
EPSU consulted widely among its constituents in order to establish the priority areas
for 1997. The strategy proposed is aimed at increasing EPSU's effectiveness by focusing on
four areas identified as priorities by the national foundations over the last year.
They are:
- Development and Enhancement of National Education Strategies
- Improving Schools and School Leadership
- Improving Instruction through Teacher Education and
Educational Materials
- Promoting School Success for Roma Children
EPSU will continue to assist national foundations in all areas where they seek
support. Please feel free to contact any member of our team with your requests. The Open
Society Education Update of January 31, 1997 introduces our new staff
members.
