The
total number of Roma pupils is around 8-10 % of all
pupils. Most of them live in the suburbs of Burgas,
and the villages around Sungulare, Karnobat, and Ruen.
The
main problem is the lack of knowledge of Bulgarian
language upon entrance in school; most Roma consider
themselves of Turkish origin. Around 50 % leave school
after the 4th grade. Many teachers do not attend classes
regularly; others are past retirement age and use
old-fashioned methods and materials.
