Roma
pupils comprise around 10-12 % of all pupils. The majority
study in Dobritch; in some schools in Kavarna, Tervel,
and Balchik Roma pupils exceed 70 % of all pupils.
Most of Roma in the region consider themselves of
Turkish origin, with a tendency towards Roma self-identification.
Roma children do not understand Roma language, and
cannot use Roma textbooks. Roma with different origins
stay in separate groups and do not communicate with
other groups. Free food under coupon rationing is
distributed in the schools, which increases class
attendance. Usually girls would leave after the 8th
grade because the parents believe their children might
be "seduced."
