Roma
comprise around 10-12 % of all pupils. Financial problems
of Roma in the municipalities of Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad,
Harmanli, and Liubimetz lead to low levels of attendance
in schools (Roma go to Greece for seasonal jobs).
Family attitudes, Roma culture and community, have
a negative influence on the children. Social segregation
exists.
In
Haskovo 87-90 % of Roma consider themselves Turks.
They speak Turkish but with an accent, and dislike
being addressed as Roma. Roma have negative attitude
towards the school; in some cases they have even threatened
the school authorities. Poor children and Roma who
do not consider themselves Turks leave school first.
Fifty percent of the pupils graduate after the 8th
grade. High school education is a rarity.
