Roma comprise around 15 % of all pupils. Many of the educational facilities in the municipalities of Dupnitza and Kjustendil are boarding schools and relief schools, where almost all pupils are Roma. Living conditions present the most serious problem: no heating and educational tools. In some places there is an evident discrimination against Roma children. For example, in Dupnitza Roma are not admitted to the elite schools in the city. There, of course, the study conditions are very good. Around 60-70 % of Roma do not attend school regularly. Most girls leave school after the 6th grade. The former principal of the school for mentally challenged children in the village of Slatino was fired recently after a rape in the school. She says rapes are common in these types of schools. Roma organizations demand to receive a special quota from the Ministry of Education for admission to secondary schools and universities.
