Almost
everywhere Roma comprise around 15 % of all pupils,
especially in the cities of Lom, Berkovitza, Montana,
Vurshetz, Vulchedrum.
The main problems of Roma children are the lack of
motivation, the low social status, the lack of access
to textbooks, and the seasonal migration of their
families in the search of jobs. Since Roma children
lack ambition, and role model to follow, they drop
from school at a very early age. Girls leave school
after the 6th grade in order to get married. Boys
marry around the age of 16-17, when they are still
in school. 70 % of the first graders complete elementary
education. Less than 10% continue in secondary school
with little chance of graduation. Ambitious families
send their children in professional schools. University
students are an exception. Richer families buy their
children fake diplomas.
