Roma
comprise around 15 % of all pupils. Most live in the
Pazardjik region, as well as in Velingrad, Rakitovo,
and Peshtera.
Ethnic
and religious clashes in the city are not common,
but they are felt in the educational system because
more Bulgarian children leave the local schools in
order to attend the central city schools. If the percentage
of Roma pupils exceeds 30-35 %, Bulgarian pupils tend
to leave the school. Due to socio-economic reasons
many Roma children drop out of school after passing
the basic level. Many girls get married at an early
age. The quality of education in the existing Roma
schools is low. Most first-graders do not speak Bulgarian
