Roma comprise around 15 % of all pupils. Most live in the Pazardjik region, as well as in Velingrad, Rakitovo, and Peshtera.

     Ethnic and religious clashes in the city are not common, but they are felt in the educational system because more Bulgarian children leave the local schools in order to attend the central city schools. If the percentage of Roma pupils exceeds 30-35 %, Bulgarian pupils tend to leave the school. Due to socio-economic reasons many Roma children drop out of school after passing the basic level. Many girls get married at an early age. The quality of education in the existing Roma schools is low. Most first-graders do not speak Bulgarian
