Roma
children comprise around 8-10 % of all pupils. Most
live in Pernik, Trun, Radomir, and some villages around
Breznik. Poverty and high unemployment reflect on
the educational process: families do not have money
for textbooks, shoes, and clothes. The number of illiterate
children is rising. In borderline regions the closure
of schools makes the concentration of children impossible.
Around 45 % Roma study in primary school in the municipality
of Trun, 10 % graduate from elementary school. The
de-industrialization and the excess of unqualified
workers, who otherwise work in mines, plants, and
on building sites, are the specific problems for the
region. Once prospective professional training attracted
Roma, who now steal or gather scraps for a living.
The children prefer to go to Sofia and try their luck
rather than stay in school.
