Roma
comprise around 10 % of all pupils. Most live in the
municipalities of Cherven Brjag, Levski, and Pleven.
Bad family environments, low social status, lack of
motivation create a negative attitude towards the
school. Roma consider themselves of Bulgarian origin;
they have Bulgarian names, and speak Bulgarian. The
ones who identify themselves as Turks have arrived
recently. Very few call themselves Roma in Pleven.
Girls do not leave school as in other regions. Most
boys attend the agricultural school; girls attend
the food industry school. Roma and Bulgarians respect
each other. Children play together; Roma and Bulgarian
holidays are celebrated. Lately there have been hostile
actions against Roma in the villages. Local organizations
have been formed to protect property and crops from
Roma attacks.
