Roma comprise around 10-13 % of all pupils. Most live in Plovdiv - Stolipino, Purvomai and the nearby villages: Assenovgrad, Karlovo, and Sopot. The biggest problem is the powerful community in Stolipino, which creates its own order. The ghetto life presents a model for all educational and social problems of Roma. Few Roma leave the neighborhood, and few take interest in education. Most parents are poor and unemployed, while a few families are very rich. Rich Roma have not made their fortunes as a result of education, but illegally and most children leave school after the 8th grade. Roma rarely graduate from secondary school. The exceptions are from Plovdiv and Assenovgrad. The school in Assenovgrad offers excellent education. The village Roma apply to the SPSs in Sadovo and Purvomai. Each year 3-4 graduates of SS "Naiden Gerov" - Plovdiv continue their education in university.

Lately Roma have started to consider themselves of Turkish origin, which to a certain extent explains why many girls leave school after the 4-5th grade.
The specifics of the region are close to the "perfect" reality type: the combination of big city and big ghetto (Plovdiv); medium-size city with good Roma school (Assenovgrad); and villages with a Roma majority (Boiantzi in the Assenovgrad municipality, and the villages around Purvomai).

Part of the members of Roma community have a Bulgarian identity, while others, richer one, identify themselves as Turks. Half of Roma speak Turkish. The ghetto community is self-sufficient and rarely Roma from the nearby villages are admitted. In the villages families barely survive. In the months of April-May Roma from all over the country migrate to the Rodopi mountains to gather herbs and mushrooms.
