Roma comprise at least 10 % of all pupils, given that many in Loznitza, Isperih, and Samuil consider themselves of Turkish origin. Usually Roma leave school after 5-6th grade. Roma fail to attend school because of financial difficulties and ethno-psychological problems. Discrimination exists in some places. Characteristic of the region is the need to merge classes in elementary school in order to achieve efficacy of the teaching process. Lack of coordination between schools, local authorities, and social institutions prevents the effective admission of all children. The community does not understand that the children have to speak Bulgarian in order to be able to communicate in the future. Most Roma have Turkish identity, and their children speak Turkish.
