Roma
comprise around 10-15 % of all pupils. The greatest
number live in Russe, while the other municipalities
have equal number of Roma population - about 10 %.
In all places Roma are less than the Bulgarian and
Turkish population, with the exception of the town
of Borovo (1150 Roma, 5258 Bulgarians, 930 Turks).
Over 90 % are unemployed and have low professional
qualification. There is very low motivation on part
of the parents to educate their children. Social anomalies
are common - family members do not communicate with
the children, and as a result they cannot speak. Some
believe children cannot think analytically, but only
can retell whatever they have heard. Roma have lower
IQ because they do not speak the language. Most consider
themselves Turks and feel insulted if addressed as
Roma. Roma of Turkish origin have problems speaking
Bulgarian. Roma of Bulgarian origin and Turks speak
fluent Bulgarian. Girls do not attend school (parents
do not allow them to attend school after the 4th grade
for fear of being stolen), but the tendency is positive
since few get married early. The Russe Roma got famous
with the "Norwegian trip" - around 800 asked
for economical refuge in Norway, but were denied.
