According
to unofficial data Roma comprise around 25-30 % of
all pupils in Sliven and the region. Out of a hundred
children in the first grade, twenty graduate from
the eighth grade. Roma study in 35 educational facilities
in the Sliven municipality: 56 % of these pupils consider
themselves Roma, 36 % - Turks (in some villages up
to 90%), and 8 % consider themselves Bulgarians. The
study of Turkish as a mother tongue has been requested
at some places (in 1994 seven groups of a hundred
students each were formed). Low social status and
lack of understanding of Bulgarian are among the main
impediments. Girls get married at an early age, which
is also a problem. Due to the lack of understanding
of Bulgarian, Roma drop out of school before the 4th
grade. Financial setbacks are not the main reason
for the low level of school attendance. The parents
do not show any interest in the education of their
children. Although in the Sliven region many Roma
acquire university degrees, it seems education is
not considered top priority in Roma community. Spring
migrations (starting early spring and continuing through
the end of September) add up to the low social status,
which keep Roma out of the schools. The "market
