Roma
comprise less than 5 % of all pupils. There is no real
grouping of Roma in the region. The living standards
are considered as a problem, although it is assumed
that Roma do not have financial drawbacks - many live
in two-story buildings. However, unemployment levels
are high. Lack of interest in education and schools
is observed. Other reasons were pointed out: Roma
have low IQ, subject to bad influences from their
kin, which provoke negative behavior. The physiological
problem of lagging behind is also pointed out as drawback.
Compared with the overall characteristics for the
country, in the Smoljan region the living standards,
the culture, and the crafts are on a higher than the
average level. According to the interviewed, Roma
are engulfed in the culture of their community. The
demographic crisis has affected Roma too. Prejudices
on part of the Bulgarians should also be mentioned.
