Roma
comprise between 10-12 % of all pupils. In some small
towns the ghetto problems take dramatic dimensions
(RD Zdravetz in Samokov, RD Iztok in Ihtiman). In
the villages of these municipal centers the percentage
of Roma is high; the same is true for Botevgrad and
Dolna Bania. The percentage drops when moving westwards
to Kostinbrod, Slivnitza, Dragoman (3-5 % of all pupils).
Attendance in borderline region schools is poor. The
major problem for Roma students is the lack of understanding
of Bulgarian. Such drawbacks complicate the educational
process especially in classes with pupils of different
ethnic background. The educational problem does not
involve only Roma, but all the children from the region.
Sofia city attracts the region's intellectual and
financial resources.
The
majority of Roma population consider themselves Bulgarians
- Christians. Followers of Evangelists or other sects
are rare. Around 10 % of Roma consider themselves Turks.
All Roma in the region speak Bulgarian and Turkish.
Almost
50% of Roma children cannot read and write correctly.
Upon entering puberty children drop out of school.
