Roma
comprise around 15-20 % of all pupils. Many schools
in the region - especially SS "H. Smirnenski"
in Stara Zagora - are 90 % "Roma Schools";
schools in Kazanluk and the villages in the municipalities
of Chirpan, Nikolaevo, Bratia Daskalovi, are also
predominantly Roma. In some villages around Kazanluk,
Pavel Bania, Mugliz, there are mainly Roma and Turkish
residents and a few Bulgarians. It seems the greatest
number of pure Roma schools is in Stara Zagora region.
Poverty,
increasing unemployment, lack of investments in the
educational sphere are the main problems of this region.
It is evident that education cannot be a priority
in poor families. For Roma the main problem is still
the language barrier. Because of poor attendance in
kindergartens, many Roma do not speak Bulgarian, until
they go to school. The marginalization of Roma community
is speeded up by the unemployment levels, which are
higher for Roma, than they are for the Bulgarians
and the Turks. Many Roma work in agriculture in the
villages. Roma community is not united due to language
and social status differences. Roma in Stara Zagora
are integrated in the community, but the same cannot
be said for the other Roma communities in the region.
In the villages children leave school illiterate;
with no job prospects, going for an early marriage
and crime.
