Roma comprise around 8-10 % of all pupils, but exact figures are not known because many Roma consider themselves Turks. The majority live around Turgovishte. Roma have low levels of education, and live in a tight community, which impedes the educational possibilities for the children. The most progressive individuals leave the region. Schools lack textbooks. Parents do not understand the benefits of education.
