Roma
comprise around 8-10 % of all pupils, but exact figures
are not known because many Roma consider themselves
Turks. The majority live around Turgovishte. Roma
have low levels of education, and live in a tight
community, which impedes the educational possibilities
for the children. The most progressive individuals
leave the region. Schools lack textbooks. Parents
do not understand the benefits of education.
