The
total percentage of Roma pupils is around 15 %; the
majority lives in Vidin's neighborhood "Nov put",
in the villages around the city or the municipalities
Dunavtzi, Bregovo, Makresh, and Ruzintzi. Most Roma
children continue secondary education in the Agricultural
School in Dunavtzi, the SPS in building and textiles
in Vidin, and rarely the Vidin's SS. Since many schools
have been shut down due to small number of pupils,
boarding schools are wide spread with a majority of
male Roma as tenants. Many
Roma consider themselves Bulgarians, and speak Bulgarian.
If the teenagers leave school, it is due to poverty
and seasonal jobs rather than marriages. The Drom
Foundation is working on a project for desegregation
of Roma children by transferring children to the central
schools of Vidin. The project accounts for 50 out
of the 646 Roma children and its evaluation among
the community is contradictory.
