Roma comprise around 15 % of all pupils. Around 47 % of the Turkish population is actually comprised of Roma identifying themselves as Turks. These Roma speak Turkish dialects, and the Turks do not recognize them as their nationals. The main problems are of economic character - parents are unemployed and cannot support their children. The school and municipal authorities cannot help either. Teenagers leave school after the 8th grade because of marriage or job opportunities. Other problems include lack of common knowledge (they come to school with no knowledge of Bulgarian, which hinders the educational process), lack of motivation to attend school (both on behalf of students and teachers). School education is not a priority for Roma. Roma "do well" in primary school, though in the fourth grade they are still unable to read or write.
