Romania. In the Ceausescu era, prisoners and Roma were forced to undertake the most dangerous work in the notorious toxic factories of the “black city” Copsa Mica, in Transylvania. The factories in this most polluted corner of Romania closed down five years ago. Today, Romani families like Petru Carolea’s, still live in the soot and black dirt behind the factories, with a bleak future before them.

Macedonian Profile: DROM Kumanovo

Macedonia. Every spring, when the snow melts in the mountains, the dirty water of a nearby river floods the Roma settlement of Kumanovo. When the waters recede, they leave behind a desert of mud.
Hungary. Scrap-metal collectors from Kerepes separate tires from rims. For every kilogram of scrap metal they get paid five cents.
