Holocaust and Citizenship Education Forum

"We are pleased to send you our first information letter about the international conference "Holocaust and Citizenship Education Forum", organized by the Hannah Arendt Association, to be held on November 19-21. in Budapest. The Holocaust and citizenship education is one of the most important educational purpose of the year 2000. The representatives of countries - including Hungary - participated at the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust expressed their commitment to promote education, remembrance and research about the Holocaust in schools, universities and other institutions. The next school year is the first one when the Holocaust will be remembered in Hungarian schools. The purpose of the Forum is to give practical help to teachers and educators with teaching ideas, publications and film they can use in their classrooms. We would like to make available for the participants all the teaching materials that were presented at the Forum. The key question of the conference is in which way teachers can promote the deeper understanding of the consequences of racism, prejudice, anti-Semitism and totalitarianism and improve participation in democracy. We would like you to send us:
- a letter of interest in participating at the conference
- an abstract of your proposed workshop or plenary presentation
- a description of the teaching method and material you and your organization could offer to Hungarian teachers, including the help you need to make them available (e.g. translation, printing, copying, dubbing, copy rights, etc.)

We would like to finance the Forum from different sources and would be very thankful if your organization could finance your trip to Budapest and/or could support the Forum. We would appreciate your ideas where we could turn for other funds. We are looking forward to your positive respond and would like you to circulate our invitation among your partner organizations. Yours sincerely,
Monika Kovacs

CONFERENCE: Intercultural Education and Cooperative Learning

Insights and practices after 5 years of European Experience, 13-16 May 2000, Ghent, Belgium

An interactive, intercultural conference organised by The Centre for Intercultural Education (Steunpunt Intercultureel Onderwijs), University of Ghent, Belgium The IAIE, International Association for Intercultural Education The Uppsala University In-service Training Department, Sweden The University of Kristianstad, Sweden With the support of the European Commission

What is it all about?
Intercultural education encourages students to cope in a positive and active way with social and cultural diversity. As such, intercultural education prepares all children for living together in a democratic, plural society and contributes to the provision of equal opportunities. One of the possible tools to implement intercultural education is provided by CLIP (acronym for Cooperative Learning in Intercultural Education Project). Based on Complex Instruction (CI, Stanford University, California) CLIP creates conditions for students to cooperate in heterogeneous groups. As CI it aims at the participation of all students in the learning process which take place in the school.

A genuine experience for you?
For the past 5 years teachers, principals, teacher training institutes and scientific researchers of 8 countries of the European Community have been developing CLIP. The conference will present you their genuine experiences, insights, practices, questions and possible solutions.

For whom?
Teachers, principals, teacher training institutes, schools advisory services and local and national authorities interested in the principles and practice of intercultural education.

International Festival of Tolerance I:

Learning, Sharing, and Understanding Through Drama
Terezin Memorial, Czech Republic
Thursday, April 27 - Monday, May 1, 2000
The Association for the Advancement of Education for Democracy (AED)
Etzelstrasse 17 CH 8800 Thalwil, Switzerland
Tel. +411 721 04 64 or +411 720 38 61, Fax +411 721 04 62, e-mail: zemo@access.ch

The festival will focus on themes of tolerance and international understanding, with emphasis on the history of Terezin and the art, music, and theatre produced there during its years as a Nazi concentration camp. The festival will be organized and administered by AED, in association with Facing History and Ourselves Europe and the International School of Prague.

Forty students and teachers from schools in Europe and North America will be invited to attend. Students will work in ensembles of 12 to 16, which will be mixed by age and background. From the work of these ensembles, we will create a short theatre piece on the festival themes which will be shared with participants and guests on the final day of the festival. A parallel program for teachers will include sessions on historical background and classroom resources, as well as participation in selected festival activities (either actively or as observers).

Students must be between the ages of 15 and 18 and should have a reasonable command of English. (They do not need to be completely fluent in English, but they must be comfortable enough in the language to be willing to use it -- Both actively and passively -- in an intensive four days of speaking and listening.) Experience in drama is not required, but an interest in drama and history is. Students also need to have:

- a willingness to take risks
- a commitment to work
- a willingness to work collaboratively
