By fostering mentorship relationships between Soros foundation network senior management and fellows and hosting a series of five seminars at OSI-Budapest over the course of the fellowship year, IPF offers its fellows an extraordinary degree of support, training, guidance and project followup. IPF pairs each fellow with one or two mentors who are Soros foundations network-affiliated, and preferably with one mentor in Budapest. Each mentor should assist no more than two fellows, and preferably only one.

Mentors should

  1. Maintain contact with fellows every few weeks by telephone, fax or email to discuss the development of projects;
  2. Meet with fellows at least twice during the fellowship year to discuss projects;
  3. Participate in fellowship seminars when possible (see the fellowship calendar for details);
  4. Facilitate fellows' contact with other representatives of the network, and participation in other appropriate meetings or activities of the network;
  5. Coordinate network requests to the fellows for assistance, if needed; and
  6. Work with fellows to devise a policy paper on program strategies for the Soros foundations network in their field(s) of expertise.
IPF provides each mentor with the complete applications of fellows including contact information as well as fellows' OSI contracts so that they are informed about specific fellowship requirements and maintains regular communication with mentors regarding fellows projects.

Other Network Contacts

Fellows are encouraged to make as many contacts with representatives of the Soros foundations network as is feasible. In addition to those formally designated as mentors, IPF identifies others in the network with whom a fellow may wish to interact. At the same time, network representatives must take care not to impose inappropriate work burdens on the fellows. Fellows may therefore request that mentors help them regulate requests for assistance made on them by the network.
